A trailer breakaway kit is an essential safety system that activates the trailer's brakes if it becomes disconnected from the towing vehicle. These kits are required for trailers equipped with brakes and exceeding certain weight limits (often 3,000 lbs or more in the U.S.).

Components of a Trailer Breakaway Kit
A standard kit typically includes:

Breakaway Switch – A spring-loaded or magnetic switch that triggers when the trailer detaches.
Breakaway Battery Box – Houses a 12V battery to power the brakes independently.
Safety Cable/Lanyard – Attaches between the trailer and tow vehicle; pulls the switch if separation occurs.

How a Breakaway Kit Works?

Step 1: Normal Towing Operation
The safety cable/lanyard is securely attached between the trailer and the tow vehicle.

The cable keeps the breakaway switch in the "off" (open) position, meaning no power is sent to the brakes.

The trailer brakes operate normally via the tow vehicle's brake controller.
Step 2: Trailer Detaches (Emergency Scenario)
If the trailer separates from the tow vehicle (e.g., coupler failure, hitch break), the safety cable pulls tight.

This force activates the breakaway switch, closing the circuit.
Step 3: Battery Powers the Trailer Brakes
The switch connects the 12V breakaway battery (mounted on the trailer) to the electric brakes.

The battery sends full power to the brakes, locking them up and bringing the trailer to a stop.
Step 4: Trailer Comes to a Safe Stop
The brakes remain engaged until:

The switch is manually reset (by pushing it back into place).
